Frontier research lab · Tashkent
OY Lab is a frontier research lab in Tashkent. We study how machines learn, compute and reason, and we build the open models, tools and people that Central Asia needs to take part in that work.
Tonight
Why we exist
A region of eighty million people should not only consume the frontier of computing. It should help define it.
Research that is judged by the same reviewers, benchmarks and peers as anywhere else, and that holds up.
Uzbek, Karakalpak and the wider Turkic family are low-resource today. We build the data, models and tools that change that.
Every project trains researchers and engineers who stay in the region and start the next thing.
Papers, weights, code and datasets are released so that others can check our work and build on it.
Research
Each area is small enough to own and large enough to matter. The borders between them are deliberately porous.
tokens 00 · uz
Pretraining, tokenization and evaluation for Uzbek, Karakalpak and their neighbours, released with weights and data.
Numerical methods and learned surrogates for physics, climate and materials problems that matter locally.
Training and serving on the hardware we actually have: quantization, scheduling and memory-aware kernels.
Agriculture, water, energy and health, in partnership with the people who run them. Deployed, measured, revised.
How we work
Oy means moon. Every project follows the same cycle, and we try to be honest about which phase we are in.
New moon

Full moon
Waning
A problem worth a year. We write the question, the baseline and the way we will know we were wrong.
Small, fast, falsifiable runs. Negative results are logged with the same care as positive ones.
Paper, weights, code and data go out together. Reviewers and the community get everything they need to reproduce it.
The work meets real users. What breaks becomes the next question, and the cycle starts again.
